We have two lodges, Big River Main Lodge

Big River is situated 120 miles Northeast of
Goose Bay, in a truly isolated, wilderness setting.
Accessible only by float plane or helicopter, this river
offers exceptional fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, sea-run
trout and, in late August, arctic char.
Big River
Main Lodge is situated on the north
bank of Big River, overlooking several channels and
pools. Here five miles from the ocean, is the
first series of pools and rapids encountered by salmon and
trout on their upstream journey. Five miles up river
from the Main Lodge, at the base of a three-mile-long rattle
- the Great White Way - is the Great
White Way Lodge. In this area of
pools and sandbars the fish again encounter some obstruction
in their journey.
Both lodges are spacious, warm and
comfortable with many modern conveniences. Indoor
plumbing, complete bathroom facilities, double occupancy
bedrooms, dining lounge, kitchen, cook's quarters, guide's
accommodation, refrigeration, radio communications, boats,
motors and smokehouse makes a well-equipped, functional and
comfortable sport fishing establishment.
The fishing season normally begins around
July 5, when the first Atlantic salmon enter the river.
The run of salmon and trout will continue into September
with the addition of arctic char toward the latter part of
August.
The largest salmon taken to date was 25
pounds, with the average run of adults being 8 to 17 pounds
and the grilse being 3 to 6 pounds. The largest
sea-run trout taken was 7.5 pounds, with the average being 3
to 5 pounds.
Since the beginning of the sports fishing on
the Big River in 1967, we have always subscribed to the
principle of hook and release and conservation, resulting in
a great return of salmon to the area in each and every year.
We understand that guests like to take fish home and we
provide excellent freezing and smoking facilities, but at
the same time fisherman are encouraged to assure the future
of the Big River by honoring the catch and release tradition
instituted so long ago.
Even in summer, the northern latitudes can
be quite cool and blustery. Daily rain showers
are typical. Come prepared for a variety of
weather. All
angling is fly-fishing only.
Bring your fishing gear, waders, insect repellent, rainwear,
medium-weight underwear, woolen socks and warm jacket and
pants.
Your camp fee covers all transportation -
Goose Bay to Big River return. You will want to
be prepared to cover gratuities, fishing licences (available
at camp) and incidentals like cooler boxes for salmon (also
available) and your choice of beverages.
